California Hotel and Casino opened in 1975. The project cost $10 million dollars and is owned by Sam Boyd and Boyd Gaming. The hotel originally had 325 rooms. The complex is located in downtown Las Vegas, next to the Fremont Street Experience.

The resort was aimed at visitors from Hawaii. Charter flights from Hawaii with minimal ticket prices were launched to encourage travelers. Cafes began offering Hawaiian cuisine, ethnic music and entourage. The steps taken increased California's popularity.

In 1994, renovations gave the resort an additional tower and enclosed pedestrian walkway to the neighboring Main Street Station Hotel, bringing the number of rooms to 781.

In 2016, the buildings and grounds were renovated and improved, with the opening of Holo Holo - The Happy Bar, Cal Sports Lounge and Redwood Steakhouse, and the famous Aloha Specialties restaurant literally transformed. The hotel has also undergone changes such as furniture replacement, updated bathroom fixtures, new carpets, etc.
