The history of Casino Barriere Biarritz is inextricably linked to that of the Groupe Barriere Corporation, which operates the establishment. The firm has been involved in the entertainment, hotel and restaurant industries for over 100 years. It all started in 1912, when the company's founder François André purchased the first casino in Belgium and started the reconstruction of the Deauville Casino. From 1951 to 1987, the business was in the hands of his nephew Lucien Barriere, whose last name is the corporation.

Today Groupe Barriere owns 37 casinos, which are located in resorts and major cities in France, Switzerland and Egypt. The firm's interests also include hotels, restaurants and bars, sports centers, golf courses, tennis clubs, etc.

The casino building was built in the early 20th century. It was opened in August 1901. The exterior of the gambling house follows the belle époque style. Its stage has seen many celebrities, including Sarah Bernhardt.

It was at Casino Municipal that the fashionable Charleston dance was first demonstrated.

In the 1990s, the building was completely renovated. It often hosts social gatherings, such as the "Russian Balls" in 2010 and 2013, which were attended by Russian ballet and opera stars.
