Casino Barriere Royan story
Casino Barriere Royan is one of the oldest gambling establishments in France. The first mention of it dates back to 1847, when engineer Lessor created a design for a casino in Royan. In 1880 a café-restaurant was built, and in the early XX century on the luxurious beach Pontaillac opened an institution for the elite La Restauration, where it became fashionable to go with a company after a vacation at sea. The wooden building did not last long, and in 1930 a concrete structure with a glass roof was erected in its place. The new casino was named Sporting, and it was adjacent to a popular liquor store.
World War II and the massive bombing of the city made some adjustments. In the 1950s, Ruyan was completely rebuilt, the magnificent casino building still delighted vacationers. The establishment was particularly popular in the 60s, where Yves Montand, Jacques Brel, Sacha Distel, Henri Salvador, Lin Renault and other celebrities performed.
Casino Royan now belongs to the famous corporation Groupe Varriere - a leader in the gambling industry in France. The firm owns 37 similar establishments located in resort towns and large cities, as well as manages hotels, restaurants, bars, sports centers, etc.
