The gambling house is located in the city of Lugano, Switzerland. The Lugano Casino was formerly called Teatro Kursaal and housed in a building designed in 1874 by Italian architect Achille Sfondrini. It was an establishment combining a theater and a casino.

The Teatro Kursaal was the first gaming hall with a café to open in the city of Lugano. In 1885, a theater society was formed. Discussions were held about changing the building so that theater and musical performances, ballroom dances and other events could be held there. Plans included opening a restaurant and café.

In 1912, the Teatro obtained a gambling license, and in 1922 the community changed its name to Società del Teatro e Casinò Kursaal di Lugano.

The last show at the theater was held in April 1997, after which the building was demolished. In 2001, a casino was built in its place and opened on Nov. 29, 2002.
