Circus Circus Hotel Casino Las Vegas was opened on October 18, 1968 by entrepreneur Jay Sarno. At first the complex looked like a casino with a circus attached to it, the hotel buildings came a little later. It was one of the first family-oriented gambling establishments in Las Vegas. The idea was that while parents played in the casino, children were entertained at circus shows. The resort was the first to introduce the concept of family vacations. In 1972, 1975, 1980, 1986 and 1996, the complex was expanded and hotel towers and motels were added to accommodate guests. Today there are five motels and three towers with a total of 3,773 rooms.

Circus Circus Circus was the flagship of Circus Circus Enterprises, later renamed Mandalay Resort Group, which also included such casino hotels as Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur and others. In 2005, Mandalay Resort Group was absorbed by MGM Mirage Corporation, and the Circus Circus complex became part of the world's second largest gaming company.

The building can be seen in the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever (1971), as well as in the computer game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (the casino, created in the image of Circus Circus, has the name "Clown's Pocket").
