Impression

Hotel Lisboa is located in the center of Macau in a beautiful setting. It is only 15 minutes drive from Macau International Airport and 5 minutes drive from the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal. The hotel is known as a symbol of Macau. The hotel rooms are luxuriously appointed and are exemplary for five-star hotels.

The main entrance to the casino is at the intersection of Prince Yin Road and Friendship Road, and there are also several entrances at the Lisboa Hotel. However, players usually do not enter through the main entrance, but through a side door on the left side of the main entrance, near which hangs a sign with the words of Ye Han, one of its creators:

"There is no winning in gambling, easy bets can be lucky, play in your spare time and have fun."
There are no admission tickets to the casino, entry and exit is free, but underage foreigners under 18 and locals under 21 are not allowed to enter. A security check is required to enter the casino, and all the screening procedures are exactly the same as when entering an airport lounge. In addition, cameras and video equipment are not allowed inside, and photography is prohibited in the casino.

Description

The Lisboa Hotel has an oriental ambience with exquisite black and gold marble floors, glittering chandeliers and an array of inlaid jewels. It houses Stanley Ho's impressive collection of antiques that adorn the hotel lobby, including amazing carved clocks and stone Buddhas.

The casino itself is decked out in dark colors, with great pomp. Dimly lit and somewhat intimidating, the main gaming room resembles a dark circular cage with numerous black pillars acting as thick square bars. This distinguishes Lisboa from modern casinos, which are better lit and have more spacious gaming rooms.

The selection of games is also in keeping with the old days, for example, there are games like Fan Tan or Pai Go, which are increasingly rare in other casinos. So if you want to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a casino from other times, Lisboa is the place to go.

Hotel Lisboa Macau story

Macau has always been known as a "gaming port," and the gaming industry in Macau has a long history of more than 150 years. The Chinese were so gambling-minded that they even refused to comply with a gambling prohibition order issued by the metropolis of Portugal in 1896.

The most popular gambling games in the first half of the 20th century were Fantan and Pai Gow; Western gambling began to come into use much later.

In 1961, a consortium formed by Fok Indong, Stanley Ho, Ye Deli and Ye Han won a casino franchise in Macau, and since then the Macau gambling industry has entered a period of maturity and prosperity.

The Lisboa Hotel, designed by architect Gan Ming, opened on June 11, 1970, and was the largest hotel in Macau, as well as the first five-star hotel. Hung Wai Ho wrote:

"This new hotel complex with a casino attracted so many visitors from Hong Kong that it even caused a shortage of ferry tickets at the ferry company owned by STDM."

It was the Lisboa Casino Hotel that became Macau's gaming showcase and remained a major tourist destination until the early 21st century. The first VIP lounges appeared here and the first junkets began operating

  • In the late 1970s, Hotel Lisboa was expanded - an additional wing of the hotel was built.
  • In the 1980s, three floors and upper architectural embellishments were added to the casino building, the West Building was built and the old wing was expanded.
  • In the 1990s, expansion continued with the renovation of additional West Wing hotel buildings and the expansion of an additional Seng Hing Bank wing on the Lisboa Casino side.

After more than 30 years of continuous expansion, the current Hotel Lisboa now consists of three interconnected buildings in brown-yellow and white, including two hotel buildings in the East Tower (old wing) and the West Tower (new wing). The cylindrical Portuguese-style building looks like a birdcage from afar. The East and West buildings are adjoined by an annex connected to the circular main building. Casino Lisboa is located to the left of the main hotel entrance, in a 5-story round building.

Table games at Lisboa are offered in a relatively small room with 97 gaming tables, which is decorated in dark colors with subdued lighting. Twelve large dragons descend from the ceiling clutching color-changing balls, their bodies and tails echoing the sharp contours of the walls. The ceiling itself is a strange assemblage of imprinted symbols and designs that have no common theme and are hard to distinguish. There is no other gaming hall like it in all of Macau, at once spartan and chic.

The VIP lounges have other gaming tables where higher stakes games are played in a private atmosphere.

Not surprisingly, Lisboa offers more traditional Macau games. Of particular note are the banking options available in 3 Card Baccarat and Pai Gow. Bank games slightly reduce the casino's advantage and are rarely offered at other Macau casinos.

The list of all casino games looks like this:

  1. 3 card Baccarat
  2. Banking 3 card Baccarat
  3. Baccarat
  4. Blackjack
  5. Fan Tan
  6. Fish Prawn Crab
  7. Pai Gow
  8. Sic Bo
  9. Roulette

Limits vary, with a lower limit of 20 HKD for roulette, blackjack starting at 50 HKD. Many other games have a lower limit of HKD100 or HKD200.

The highest limits can be found in the VIP rooms on the second floor. For example, the gold VIP room has five baccarat tables with limits of more than HKD2,000. Another room has two baccarat tables with limits of HKD 10,000. Elite Worldclub is to the left of the elevators and has five baccarat tables for HKD 1,000 and one for HKD 2,000. In roulette, you can start at HK$100.

Outside these VIP areas, the minimum bet does not exceed HK$500. The third and fourth floors are owned exclusively by Junket operators, with between fifteen and twenty different companies. These rooms have a rather dated luxury design with black steel and gold.

The Lisboa Hotel has two other casinos. The exquisite Mona Lisa Casino has 20 baccarat tables with limits ranging from 50 to 1,000 HKD in one room. There are five more gaming tables on another floor in this casino, two of which are blackjack tables. The bets at the baccarat tables are 500 HKD, while the blackjack tables are rarely open.

The Crystal Palace casino is quite simple, it is also located in the Lisboa Hotel and has 2 blackjack tables, 3 Sic Bow tables and 36 baccarat tables. The lower limit is HKD 100, 200, 300 and 500.

The slot machine room is located in a separate room accessed through the Lisboa lobby. There are 65 slots in total, with bet sizes ranging from ten cents to two HKD. You can also play electronic baccarat or sic bow.

Entertainment

Entertainment options include a heated indoor pool with limited seating on the surrounding terrace. Hotel guests can also visit:

  • a spa with massage services,
  • a hair and nail salon,
  • a fitness center,
  • a sauna,
  • a Finnish bath.

A shopping center offers clothing and jewelry shopping, as well as free shuttle service to the ferry and nearby casinos. Nine meeting rooms are available for private events, and Wi-Fi is free.

The Lisboa Hotel has always had a variety of events and shows that have been presented over the years. The most famous, the Crazy Paris Show, was held here for more than 20 years until it was moved to the Grand Lisboa.

Today, live music still plays at one of the restaurants, Puertos del Sol, in the evenings from 8 to 1:30. It's a quiet jazz band that fits in perfectly with the atmosphere.

Loyalty program

There are three types of cards in the casino:

  1. The Player Card - used to accumulate points in games, which can later be exchanged for gifts and other bonuses. Surprisingly, the rate of points accumulation here is random. That is, a person playing at a $50 buy-in table can earn more points than someone playing at a $500 buy-in table. That's hardly fair, but that's the way it works here.
Players Card holders are also eligible for discounts at some restaurants and at some Lisboa Shopping Gallery stores.
  2. The EC Card is a cashback card that earns 0.7% on buy-ins over $1,000. However, with buy-ins over $30,000,000, the rebate rate rises to 0.8%. (Yes, that's not a mistake, it's really thirty million dollars, not three million or even three hundred thousand. Unreal.)
  3. Elite Card is another cashback card that can only be used in Elite Club VIP rooms, where table minimums are much higher. There are five different rebate programs for this card:

Conclusion

Hotel Lisboa will never again reach the heights it did from 1970-2005 as the WORST casino hotel in Macau. But Hotel Lisboa can still thrive as a great budget option for relaxing and gaming.

The casino is characterized by low limits and the availability of low-key games that are hard to find in other Macau casinos. Offering 9 different games across 95 tables, Lisboa is definitely among the best casinos in terms of diversity.
