MGM Grand Resort Casino Las Vegas story
MGM Grand Resort Casino in Las Vegas previously had other names. The property was originally home to the Golf Club Motel. In 1973, Southwest Securities Development announced the construction of a 2,640-square-foot Airport Marina hotel and casino. In 1975, Wiesner Investment Company built the hotel, which had 3,805 rooms.
In 1989, the resort was bought by billionaire Kirk Kerkorian. He did not demolish the hotel, but built a solid, presentable resort around it, called the MGM Marina Hotel. Currently, the old hotel building is the west wing of the main MGM Grand Hotel.
In 1993, the last building of the current resort was completed. In 1995, a monorail was built to connect the MGM Grand Hotel and Bally's Resort. During the modernization and renovation process, the buildings were improved and enhanced with the addition of restaurants, gaming areas and machines, a convention center and shopping mall, nightclubs, a theme park, etc.
In 2000, the owners of the atrium underwent a major renovation to remove the Oz theme that had been present in the casino and at the main entrance since 1993.
In 2011-2012, all rooms and suites in the hotel's main tower were renovated, as well as public spaces and the casino floor. In 2017, MGM Resorts International expanded the convention center to 79,000 square feet.
In 2020, they announced the sale of a 49.9 percent stake in the atrium to a venture comprised of MGM Growth Properties and Blackstone Group. The remainder of the shares remained owned by MGM.
The MGM complex can be seen in the movies "Ocean's Eleven Friends," "Vegas Vacation," "Swingers" and "The Great White Hype."
