MGM Macau story

The MGM Grand Macau's history began on December 18, 2007, when the atrium opened. The architects for the resort are Wong Tung & Partners. The project was estimated to cost about US$1.25 billion. The management company is MGM Resorts International. As part of the rebranding of the MGM Mirage (Las Vegas) resort, the atrium was renamed MGM Macau in 2010.

The resort was publicly traded in 2011. Pansy Ho, daughter of gaming magnate Stanley Ho, received a 29 percent stake. MGM Resorts got 51%, with other owners owning the balance, 20%.

The casino's two levels cover more than 20,000 square meters and take over Grand Prairie. The area is something of a connecting center, with restaurants, stores, shows, performances and meetings.

The property includes a conference room of more than 1,400 square meters, an 807-square-meter ballroom, a spa area, 12 catering establishments and bars. More recently, the resort underwent a renovation that expanded the casino, adding 240 machines and 70 gaming tables.

Interesting fact: In 2011, operator MGM China went public on the Hong Kong stock exchange and made $1.5 billion in an initial share sale.

MGM Macau casino

The casino offers more than 400 gaming tables and 1,000 machines located on the main floor. Most of the tables accept bets of $100-$200. At Grande Praca, the value rises to $500 or more. For those who like to bet big, the Las Vegas Room offers minimums of $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000. This room features baccarat tables and one roulette table.

The bulk of the machines accept bets up to $1. The maximum bet in this area reaches $10. Such machines are placed near the Las Vegas room. Of the electronic games available, baccarat, blackjack, craps, roulette and sic bo are located on the left side of the casino.

The gambling area will never be crowded because the machines and tables are properly spaced throughout the area. The non-smoking area is the area near the Las Vegas Room. The room is decorated stylishly and tastefully. The area includes 35 rooms and 200 tables with stakes ranging from $1,000 to $3,000.

The top three floors are reserved for VIP gaming: Hap Tak and Sun City are on the 33rd floor, Golden Way and Sky Club are on the 36th floor, and David 66 is on the 66th floor. To become a VIP member, you'll need to wager at least $100,000 in a month, in which case you'll get a certain percentage of cashback.

Take in Western culture at Grande Praça, where guests are treated to many interesting stories and descriptions of Sino-Portuguese culture. An art tour will take vacationers through a miniature Lisbon, showing unique architecture and romantic spots.

The Valkyrie Octopus Art installation is open 24 hours a day. It was created by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos and commissioned by the MGM management company in 2015. Guests will enjoy spending time in this area and taking photos as a souvenir.

An immersion into an underwater wonderland is possible during the Sea Odyssey show. The show is held daily at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. The show features flying aquatic animals made of helium balloons: seahorses, dolphins, corals...

In the heart of Grand Pras is an 8-meter cylindrical aquarium that offers a 360-degree view. Here one can see various exotic fish such as panther sea bass, Blue Moon angel fish, clown fish, stingrays and inhabitants of the seas and oceans.

Besides these activities, visitors can visit the spa, gym, swimming pool and Jacuzzi. The atrium features a variety of boutiques and stores, as well as special rooms for celebrations, corporate events and weddings.

The casino features most of the major Western games except Texas Hold'em. Although three-card poker is hard to find in Macau, MGM has it.

Baccarat has an additional $25 bet. Games offered are blackjack, three-card baccarat, Caribbean Stud poker, craps, roulette, sic bo with eight different bets, machines and slots, 12 video poker machines, and war.

MGM likes to give guests expensive cars. Once it was a Maserati, then a Bentley. There are prizes in baccarat, too: in a tournament, the champion receives HKD 18888888, $200,000 in chips and prizes worth $388888.

• The elegant atmosphere and sophistication of a 1930s beer bar reigns at Aux Beaux Arts. The vintage restaurant is designed in an Art Deco style using copper tones.
• The cozy open floor plan at Pastry Bar allows guests to take their minds off everyday activities and dine in a cozy atmosphere. Sip an espresso or glass of wine at the bar, which is suitable for all occasions.
• Rossio offers a wide selection of seafood, from cleaned oysters and clam plates to fried lobster and baked fish. Experienced chefs prepare the delicacies in front of diners.
• Wall-to-wall glass wine cabinets line the perimeter of Aba Bar, which is more reminiscent of a luxurious boudoir than a typical bar.
