The resort, called Sam's Town, opened on April 1, 1979. It was one of the first locals-oriented casinos to be built in Las Vegas Valley.

The atrium has undergone eight expansions and renovations since its inception. In 1994, the original hotel rooms were demolished and a tower with 650 new rooms was added. In 2000, the gambling area was enlarged, and a buffet, pool and parking garage, and a special event center were added.

The gambling house is owned and operated by Boyd Gaming Corporation. The resort is frequented by high rollers who are offered free flights, lodging and meals. Under the junket tour agreement, they are required to play and participate in tournaments.
